The Abby Sobrato Scholarship was established by John Matthew Sobrato in memory of his mother, who passed away from Pancreatic Cancer in 2010. A teacher herself, she inspired him to go into the teaching profession and always pushed for equal opportunities for every student. This scholarship seeks to honor those values, her memory, and provide expanded opportunities for students attending TFHE schools in San José, California, through significant scholarship support that will facilitate college access and success. The students who attend the Latino College Preparatory Academy, Luis Valdez Leadership Academy, and Roberto Cruz Leadership Academy are the only students who can be awarded this unique scholarship.
For the 2017-2018 academic year, as many as seventy (70) students can earn this scholarship. It awards each recipient $7,000 dollars in college aid every year for four years, so long as awardees maintain eligibility. $3,000 is reserved for tuition, and $4,000 is used to provide a mentor for each student, as well as support services. The mentor each awardee receives is an invaluable part of this scholarship, and mentors can assist awardees in securing internships and employment upon graduation.
